The famous Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me featured a car-slash-submarine, perhaps the most iconic of Bond’s Lotus vehicles due to its submersible ability. The Lotus Esprit, lost in storage for decades, recently sold at auction for almost a million dollars to none other than our favorite billionaire inventor, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX. Laughable in the accuracy of the new driver of the vehicle being none other than real-life Bond Elon Musk, the buyer himself will be retro-fitting the Lotus with a Tesla electric powertrain, enabling the car to be road-ready and electric.
This information came right before Musk’s visit to Germany, where he discussed EV viability on the Autobahn, as well as the German Tesla Supercharger network. To accommodate the speeds common on the Autobahn roadway, Musk is bringing engineers to Germany to work over new Model S’s, as well as those previously purchased, with better high speed handling. Furthermore, the German Supercharger network, to be installed by the end of the 2014 year, will consist of 40-50 stations to accomodate the needs of German Tesla drivers.
