$$ for MD EV Owners!

If you own a plug-in electric vehicle in Maryland, you could get up to $1000 in excise taxes from the state.  This excise tax became effective on July 1st, 2013 and will only last until June 30th, 2014, so now is the perfect time to invest in an electric vehicle!

To be eligible, the car must meet some requirements, one being that its maximum speed capability is at least 55 mph and another that it can be recharged from an external source of energy.  These requirements, along with the other 9, are very typical of the average plug-in vehicle.

The tax comes in three different tiers:

  • Level 1: $600, The battery capacity must be between 4.0 and 10.0 kilowatt-hours
  • Level 2: $700, The battery capacity must be between 10.1 and 15.0 kilowatt-hours
  • Level 3: $1000, The battery capacity must be over 15.0 kilowatt-hours

The tax form can be completed with your dealer if you are buying a car new, or you can download the form here.  Happy shopping!
