Ever wanted to be James Bond? Now you can pretend to be in Tesla’s Model S electric vehicle. A new option on the car’s touchscreen control panel allows you to select the submersible Lotus Esprit from 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me. There’s even a Jules Verne reference for the well-read. One of the depth options includes “20,000 leagues” as in, under the sea. So how do you get this James Bond experience? Click the control menu for the technician login screen. Then hold down the T button and type “007”
In 2013, Elon Musk won the prop car used in the movie at an auction. He plans to eventually convert the prop into a functional submersible. Elon Musk said to Slashgear, “It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater” Musk said via a Tesla spokesperson. “I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform. What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric power train and try to make it transform for real.”
Despite Musk’s dreams of driving a real submersible, you probably won’t be cruising underwater anytime soon, but isn’t running a car on electric power almost as cool?
