Computer chips have been doubling in speed every few years. Digital displays are becoming brighter and sharper with each new smart device produced. Engineers at companies such as Apple, Google, and Samsung are coming up with new ideas everyday. The smart watches, Google glasses, and that new Samsung phone with the light-up edges are few recent ones. They are all modern, forward-thinking ideas that today’s consumer will find difficult to ignore. However, even though computing power is growing at a seeming exponential rate, battery technology is starting to plateau. In fact, one could go so far as to say that battery technology is somewhat stuck in the 20th century. The lithium ion batteries used in all devices these days is a technology that is decades old. Sure there have been some improvements and new ideas over the years for better batteries, but it is difficult to ensure safety. Now, one might be wondering what this has to do with electric vehicles? Well, it will probably be the smart device market that really drives the push for developing batteries with a higher energy density than todays offerings. Most electric vehicles also use a lithium ion battery, so if Apple can invent a better battery for their smartphones, then that same technology could also be used in electric vehicles to improve their performance as well. As devices grow smaller (like the smart watches), small batteries with high energy densities will be needed to have the same operating time between charges. After all, no one will buy a smart watch no matter how many apps it can run if it will only hold a charge for few hours.
