Obama’s solar plans may not be enough to ensure our future

President Obama has recently unveiled plans to further help the growth of solar power by funding the installation of solar panels in low-income communities. In fact, Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates that $3.7 trillion will be spent on solar systems across the globe by 2040. Unfortunately, these efforts and others will likely not be enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a level deemed appropriate by scientists. Coal continues to have a great grip on energy sourcing as does current fossil fuel plants and new ones being built in developing nations.
United Nations Scientists have said a 40%-70% reduction in gas emissions by 2050 will allow us to avoid climate disaster. The Bloomberg report predicts emissions to be 13% higher in 2040 than they are today. An urgent change to global policy needs to occur, and it needs to happen soon.
